[The Blue Light was rather nice. Full of booze at any rate. And Howl found that conjuring currency was frighteningly easy in this place, like no one's set up any safe guards against it at all. Now he's several beers deep and in danger of breaking into Sosban Fach any moment. He does always get rather sentimental when he's been drinking. He leans against the wall in the hallway, trying his hardest to make everything stop being so wibbly and gives Peter a firm look.]
What exactly are we doing here again?
What exactly are we doing here again?
[Peter is cone sold stober. Wait, sone cold cober. STONE. COLD. SOBER. Whatever. He rolls his eyes at Howl.]
I told you. Chekarly lives here.
I told you. Chekarly lives here.
[It doesn't take them long to reach the apartment block. Howl has to drop Sophie's hand to unlock the door, but he holds it open for her to go through.]
Here we are. I'd say excuse the mess, but we both know I prefer it that way.
Pavel! Are you home?

Pavel! Are you home?
Pavel! You didn't tell me you have a sweetheart in the city! I feel hurt and crushed. I though we were friends!
[ They've been talking so much about cooking together (or her teaching him to cook, at least) — it is time to finally put those words into action. Tessa has borrowed two cooking books from the library, one with the meals that she is more used to and one on Russian food, and she's waiting for him by the fountain where they agreed to meet, the books under one arm. ]

DELACROIX to CHEKOV: 14-06 re: Transferral For several months now I have been recompiling the outlines of my research. As we both are aware, the facilities available here in the City differ vastly from what is known centuries from now, but we have the good fortune of Mr. Stark's enthusiasm. I have presented him with the details of my FTL and outlined the alterations I wish to make in building a miniaturized prototype. My hope is not to travel the stars, but to evoke its frequencies in a way which may garner us all our freedom from this place. Mr. Stark has been intrigued by my presentation, and has approved my proposals for staff and materials.
With your permission, I would like to request your transferal to my team. I hope you will consider it.
Sincerely,
Marie
[Howl is currently very angry at Pavel. And is expressing this anger by piling him up with blanket and books and complaining about it the entire time.]
I did have work I needed to get to today, you know.
[He drops off another one of Chekov's science-y books he can't begin to understand and checking that his leg is still elevated.]

[Uhura raps on Chekov's bedroom door, tendrils of hideously orange hair escaping from the hat she snagged from somewhere. The moment he opens the door, she'll say]
I need a job.
I need a job.

[Korra doesn't spend much time at home these days; everything's still too raw and painful.
So when she's not training in the park, she's spending a fair amount of time with Chekov, the one uncomplicated person in her life. Today she invited him to hang out with her and Naga at Xanadu. She's noticed how fascinated Chekov is by the polar bear dog, and Naga seems to enjoy the attention.]

You hung up on me. Do you know how rude that is? Not to mention I am worried--was worried about you, but you know what, now I'm just mad at you for being rude and mean and did I mention, rude.
You know what, you don't want me to worry then fine. Wish granted.
[Not true of course. She'll still worry.]
[And she hangs up on him loudly.]

[It's been some years since she's done any real home-schooling. Something not magic-based anyway. She's stretched out on her stomach under the main central column of their blanket fort, filling in the notebook Mr. Chekov started for her with careful black numbers.]
Hey Chekov, I'm going dancing tonight. Wanna come? [insert time and location here]
Oh! And bring Lucy along. It'd be nice to see her again.

[After a few days, Uhura decides enough is enough. Wednesday evening, she climbs up onto the roof where he's sulking.]
All right, Pavel, out with it.
All right, Pavel, out with it.
[Korra tries to focus on her breathing as she runs through her airbending forms. It's more for Jinora's sake than anything else; they'd been doing even more airbending training than usual to distract the young girl from the loss of Miles.
Korra just envies him. These past few weeks, it's felt like the City has been deliberately taunting her, rubbing her face in things she'll never have. Her bending back. Mako saying he loves her (she's let him go, but that doesn't mean the thought of him doesn't still have a bittersweet pang). Li being gentle & caring. Her mind is a confusing jumble of memories -- her alternate self, her child self, and her own. She wishes she could just go home, even if it's to a world where everyone knows her failure. At least it would be simpler.
Breathe in. Breathe out. Just think about your breathing. There is nothing else.]

[Korra waits outside of Chekov's office building, leaning against Naga as she waits for the young Russian to come out. She actually isn't sure if he's in or not, but this is her best bet. Uhura still won't let her in the house, even to apologize.
But Korra's tired of running and hiding. Hei was right; the City is dark and ugly enough without letting it ruin everything.
She sighs and rests her head against Naga's shoulder.]
At least I know he'll be glad to see you.

[ He's here to return equipment he's borrowed from Pavel -- a precision-centering adapter and accessory tray for the telescope. At least, on the surface. In truth Hei's aim is to replace a short-circuited bug he'd fitted earlier in Pavel's residence. Quiet, quick and unobtrusive. In theory, anyway. Unlike Korra's house, full of open spaces and cheerful luddites, Pavel's residence makes for trickier terrain. Narrower rooms mean figuring out more ingenious spots to conceal bugs in. Additionally, Pavel's from a world twice as advanced as Hei's. That means being doubly cautious with the choice of equipment and location. ]
[ (There's a small part of Hei that wonders if this is really necessary. Pavel's proven trustworthy so far. Surely the paranoid tactics can be forgone? Just once? Except the very idea is appalling. You must be going either soft or crazy. If he'd started giving everyone the benefit of the doubt back home, he'd be a dead man by now.) ]
[ At the door of Pavel's place, Hei stops. Dressed as 'Li' in a baggy buttondown shirt and scuffed jeans, a knapsack slung from his shoulder, he readjusts his grip around a heavy pot brimming with wild-mushroom stroganoff. (No reason to show up empty-handed.) ]
[ Knock, knock. ]

[What perfect timing, Li! Uhura is just about to make dinner when she hears a knock on the door. Normally she'd just let Pavel get it, but the young Russian had stepped out for a minute. Sighing a little (it's been a long day and she's a little tired for company), she closes the refrigerator and goes to answer the door.]
Li! What brings you here?
Li! What brings you here?
[It's been bothering her ever since Wednesday. How did Hei know that she had those pictures? It couldn't just be a guess. He knew which picture was missing, how long she'd had the pictures for. He's not psychic. It wasn't part of the curse.
So how?!
She can't make heads nor tails of it. She needs someone smarter than her for this. So she calls Chekov.]
Hey, are you free this afternoon?

I'm sorry
I became irrationally deranged
when you rearranged my furniture
differently than I would have.
There is something wrong with the woman who claims to have been on my ship.
Be careful.
Be careful.
When Chekov said that he's gotten the vodka, of course Laruna got food ready, because food was important when doing some serious drinking. She didn't know exactly what went with vodka so she got a bit of everything, figuring well, even if it didn't they could still eat it. The weather had been nice so she'd set it outside her distillery and waited.
Hey, Chekov. Don't freak out.
I know you saw the feed about Dax and Bones. You're the smartest person on the Enterprise, if you ask me, and I doubt these ancient bricks could lock you out of anything. I also want you to know that I'd appreciate keeping it to yourself, which I know you will.
I just didn't want you to have to tiptoe around the subject with me or get guilty over thinking you were lying.
That's about it, see you later.

This is Kirk. I'm unable to make contact with Spock, Scotty and Sulu, they were all here yesterday. I want everybody looking for them. [ A sigh. ] If anyone hears from Gaila, Dax, Tom Paris or Christopher Pike, I want to hear about that too. Anyone from Starfleet is to check in with me immediately.
I think they were removed from the City, but I want to be sure. Additionally, we have Captain Janeway newly arrived. Chekov, I want you to fill her in on whatever you can, I already gave her your version of what's going on but you can explain it better in person.
Kirk out.

Tell me more about the nature of these "curses."
