You can take breaks when you like. I used to get bored with history quickly and needed to stop working sometimes.

The history books here are mostly stuff that hasn't happened yet to me.

[She finds this very funny and giggles as she moves on the the eight times table.]

Ah, that's different! Reading about what has yet to happen is far more interesting than reading things that happened a very long time ago.

Do you think so? Sometimes it's confusing.

Yes, it can be, but I would rather be confused than bored. Wouldn't you?

I don't think so. Before anything ever happened to me life was a lot more simpler.

You were never bored?

No. I don't think so.

Then you are far more patient than I am. ...But that isn't saying much.

Not everyone gets a chance to sit and listen and wait for things like I have. I had the whole acres of nothing to myself and no one to bother me when I was growing up. Not everyone gets to be as lucky as me.

Acres of nothing? Then you lived in a rural area?

[They have rural areas in the future, but kids like Chekov who spend their lives studying aren't given much of a chance to see open land.]

Yes, in California. We had lots of land and then the neighbors on both sides had even more land and I'd go over and ride their horses sometimes. I used to think that was a secret but it turns out they knew about me doing that all along so I guess it was fine.

You rode horses? I understand why you weren't bored.

Have you ridden any of the horses in the City?

[horseish]

Yes. No one's better at understanding horses than me. I don't get to do it much here, though, since it's cold.

I take care of Rosella's horses sometimes. When it's warmer, would you like to go to the stable?

[horseish]

Yes please.

Good! Would you maybe tell me more about horses? I can ride a little, but I never saw one before I came to the City. You must know far more about them.

[horseish]

Horses are very curious. That's how you can get them to come up to you on their own. You just have to be very still and quiet and show that you're not a threat and then they'll come over to see you themselves because they always want to know what's happening.

How did you learn that? Just by being still and quiet?

[horseish]

Yes. And lots of watching. You can understand anything if you watch it long enough.

[candothat]

It is very difficult to watch particle physics.

What else have you learned about by watching?

Like tiny insects and things?

Just stuff.

Not so much. Imagine the smallest insect, and then imagine how small the billions of things that make up that insect must be--tiny things like that.
