GENERAL RESEARCH REGARDING THE CITY'S STRUCTURE AND WORKINGS
Using various resources and means, including archived network posts, to better grasp how and why the City is and the means by which people come and go.
OUTLOOK
: To be determined.
PROJECT HEAD
: None. Anyone may participate. Significant discoveries are to be reported to superior officers.

CONTROLLED SUBSPACE ANOMALY
Attempt to enlarge (or create) a subspace fracture that would allow travel to a specific universe and time without killing travelers or destroying everything in the vicinity of the anomaly.
OUTLOOK
: Grim.
PROJECT HEAD
: Janeway; Starfleet Laboratories.

FORCE FIELD
Used in the 23rd and 24th centuries for a number of uses. Janeway has developed a means of emitting a level two force field; increasing the strength of these fields is an ongoing mission.
OUTLOOK
: Positive.
PROJECT HEAD
: Janeway; Starfleet Laboratories.

WARP ENGINE
Would allow a ship to travel at faster than light speeds by distorting the local spacetime continuum. Also necessary: a starship to house it. While it will be a primitive ship out of necessity, it must be capable of withstanding warp speeds.
OUTLOOK
: Bleak.
PROJECT HEAD
: Janeway; Starfleet Laboratories.

PHASERS
The production of a weapon that is based on the designs of standard-issue phasers from the twenty-third and twenty-fourth centuries and modified to function in the current world.
OUTLOOK
: Complete.

CURSE ALERT
User can let preselected allies know that they are afflicted by a curse or in need of aid. A primitive, durable radio transmitter, interfaced with the network but independent of it, allows someone incapable of using his or her network device to send a simple message to network users. Currently, work is being done to make personal devices more secure as well as multifunctional.
OUTLOOK
: Promising. Entering trial stages.
PROJECT HEAD
: Chekov; City Solutions.

NETWORK PRIVACY
User-recognition procedures are needed to begin a network recording with the intention of eliminating "accidental posts," shared memories, etc. Although it is considered complete, there is room for improvement as some posts still get through. Work is being done to tighten security and maintain the privacy of archived posts.
OUTLOOK: Working.
PROJECT HEAD
: Chekov; City Solutions.

PERSONAL TRACKERS
Chips inserted beneath the subject's skin in a noninvasive, painless procedure relay information to specified network devices. The subject's location and vitals would be monitored remotely. The chip would stop transmitting if the subject was pulled from the City.
OUTLOOK
: Promising. Delayed by ethical concerns.
PROJECT HEAD
: Chekov; City Solutions.

CURSE DESIGNATION ALGORITHM
A proposed algorithm that will not only track curse trends and predict future curses, but also estimate each individual's susceptibility to a curse or strain of curses. This would rely upon artificial neural networks and the self-reports of Cityzens.
OUTLOOK
: Uncertain. Securing accurate self-reports is problematic, thorough and sustained neural observation is frowned upon.
PROJECT HEAD
: Chekov; City Solutions.

STELLAR NAVIGATIONAL CHART
A complete chart of the City's unique "stellar" features, to be used as a means of nighttime navigation when technological alternatives are unavailable.
OUTLOOK
: Hopeful, if tedious.
PROJECT HEAD
: Chekov; City Solutions.

[Chekov has been maintaining radio silence since the fifteenth. The rampant alcohol-induced misery in the City, however, prompts a network post.]

Celebrations yesterday, vomiting in the streets today. It feels like the first of January.

My father has told me many ways to cure a hangover--some of the ways are ridiculous--so I will share his better suggestions. Drink pickle brine; the potassium, magnesium, and electrolytes will help. Mineral water is good, too, as is kvass, but I don't know there to find that in the City. If these don't help, jump into a very cold body of water. The cold should be enough of a distraction to make you forget your other miseries.

[There's an uncertain pause.]

Also, I have a question.

I realize that, normally, actions taken during curses are to be forgiven. What if a cursed action is encouraged or preceded by uncursed actions? Say--and this is only an example--two friends have an argument, and that becomes a fight. Maybe the fight is somewhat violent, but not so bad until the curse takes hold and one of the participants does something extreme. When uncursed and cursed are close like that, how do you know where one turns into the other? Is there a time when a cursed action is not forgivable?

[He clears his throat. It's a troubling topic, which is why he feels a need to end on an entirely different note.]

Pickle brine for hangovers. Remember that. You heard it from a Russian, and a Russian never lies about these things.

[The video opens to--well, not much of anything. It's night; the stars are visible, and Chekov's face is lit by the dim glow of his network device. He's remarkably subdued, but he typically does only pause to make network posts when he's in a low or contemplative mood.]

For anyone who has not heard already and knew them, Lena and Asami are no longer in the City. I did not know Asami as well as I wish I might have, but Lena was a good friend. At least she will be happy to be home... she did not like being in the City.

[And changing topics. No one wants to dwell on the negative.]

I have two questions. First, does anyone know how the ship on the side of the mountain came to be where it is? I went inside of it, but there was nothing informative there and most of it was, I think, inaccessible. It looks to me like a spacecraft. I have heard stories in the City of aliens and creatures coming from beyond the barriers, but nothing related to a ship like this.

My second question is this: is it common to experience memory loss in the City? If not, should I be concerned? My medical knowledge is very limited, but if there is something wrong with my brain, I would like to know. It is, after all, the most important thing that I have.

[He ends the feed with a forced smile.]

I realize that many people are distressed by this curse and I'm very sorry for that, but I have a question: are eighteenth birthdays of any special significance where you are from? At home, eighteen is the age at which someone is considered an adult. It is also the minimum drinking age in many places, as well as the minimum age for a variety of activities that I have been told about but would rather not repeat here.

Are birthdays celebrated here? We age, I know that, but it seems greedy to celebrate a birthday here only to celebrate it again after we have left.

[ooc: Yes, he is cursed. No, he does not want to share. Most importantly, tomorrow is his eighteenth birthday. There's also this deity trade thing that happened, but he would rather not talk about that, either. Or Howl. Or...]

[The scene: a roof. Which roof is unclear, but, judging from the book and notebooks visible in the dim glow of the network device's screen, Chekov was probably stargazing. Of course. What else would a sensible person be doing on a roof in the middle of the night?]

I have asked this question to individuals, but I am curious: what, generally, is the opinion on becoming attached to others here? From what I have heard and read, most seem to think that suffering the loss of someone they have become close to when they leave the City is a small price to pay for companionship. Then there are a few--or maybe there are not so few as I think--who would prefer to stay unattached to avoid being hurt. Is this assessment correct?

And those who, in theory, believe that it is wisest not to grow close to people... are they successful, or do they form attachments in spite of what they believe to be best for themselves?

[His tone is one of genuine curiosity. This is not a rhetorical question.]

I am of two minds on the subject, but I dislike the thought of being alone for however long I may stay here enough to make remaining unattached distasteful. And, when I am not theorizing and simply talking to others, it is impossible not to form friendships. Even though friends will leave and forget all experiences in the City, I keep making them, and it seems very foolish and maybe reckless when I think about it--making friends, I mean--but I feel it is better to accept loss.

It is like home, in some ways. I have always been moving and now, at home, I am in a position where having friends die is very possible and has happened. Is it different, losing a friend to death and having a friend leave the City? Logically, death should be more difficult to accept, I think, but I am not finding that so.

[A contemplative pause.]

The curse where we were turned into dogs--there was a little girl who was good enough to feed me, and I would like to thank her now that I am a person again. I think she was ten, maybe, and very pale, with light hair.

As to this last weekend's curse, no, Lucy and I are not married, although she is very kind and I mean no insult to her when I say that I am pleased to be unmarried again. Sincere apologies to anyone who was anticipating the reception.
