Random Facts

☀ Pavel has a massive extended family that is spread throughout Russia, the Ukraine, and beyond, but he seldom saw them after his higher education began in earnest.

☀ The Chekovs relocated from Taganrog to Saint Petersburg (the Nevsky District, specifically) when he was a toddler.

☀ Andrei Petrovich Chekov is a mechanic in a shipyard just outside of Saint Petersburg. Anna Irinova was a professor of linguistics.

☀ He is fluent in Russian, Standard (English), and Ukrainian; his German is so-so. He has some knowledge of Hebrew and assorted Eastern European languages that he ran into early in his childhood, and he likes picking up phrases in the various languages that he encounters. His attempts at French are particularly atrocious.

☀ Even though he has spent most of his life in environments where universal translators make it unnecessary to master multiple languages, Pavel likes speaking to others in their native tongues when possible. Not only is it practical, but he also considers language an important part of culture—a part of culture that's almost extinct on a largely-homogenized, Standard-speaking planet.

☀ Anna was a practicing Jew; Andrei has no specific religious beliefs. Pavel considers himself an atheist.

☀ Anna died when Pavel was seven years old.

☀ His maternal grandparents had a winter home in the Mare Imbrium Colony on Luna. Pavel visited them frequently when he was a child.

☀ His formal education focused on theoretical physics, but he entered the Academy before completing any doctorates.

☀ Pavel applied to Starfleet Academy three times before he was accepted at the age of fourteen. Upon acceptance, he moved to San Francisco alone as a legally emancipated minor.

☀ The Enterprise was Pavel's first starship as he lacked the opportunity to serve in space during his training.

☀ Chekov's role on the Enterprise is that of chief navigator and tactical officer, but he also spends a great deal of time in engineering with Scotty and in the science labs. He likes to stay busy!

☀ Areas of expertise include astrogation, stellar cartography, tactics, theoretical physics, temporal mechanics, and transporter theory. He also has considerable experience with and knowledge of spaceship engineering, hands-on mechanical work, computer programming, and all of the math. Yeah, all of it.

☀ His favorite stars are Castor and Pollux in the Gemini Constellation.

☀ Rachmaninov is his favorite composer. Prokofiev is second.

☀ He is a chess enthusiast and has played against (and beaten) the most formidable AIs of his time.

☀ While in the City, he learned how to drive twentieth century automobiles.

☀ While in the City, he also died when a friend literally stabbed him in the back. It was fine! It's fine, he's fine.

☀ When it comes to alcohol, Pavel has a rather sophisticated palate for his age and does not limit himself to vodka.

☀ His three favorite Russian literary characters are, in no order: Prince Myshkin, Alexei Fyodorovich Karamazov, and Tatyana Larina.

☀ His favorite colors are blue and gold.
