I wasn't scared. [And he's not looking over his shoulder to make sure no one's lurking, shhh.] I was hesitant to tell you that there is a war criminal from home here where someone might hear.
[Everett still doesn't want to go make friends with Naga--she doesn't smell like any animals he knows. He likes Korra just fine.]
And a genocidal tyrant, yes. His alias is John Harrison and he is staying near the library. I think he's avoiding trouble for now, but you might be careful.
The whole story. [It occurs to her, belatedly, that this might be difficult for him.] I mean, you don't have to, if you don't want to. But I'd like to know.
[As tempting as it is to back out of saying much of anything, Chekov hasn't talked about the debacle with Khan. He has made oblique references to specific events, sure, but talking about it properly? It's probably about time.]
When I was at home, we were deployed to Kronos to find a terrorist called John Harrison. Harrision had destroyed a Starfleet base and murdered several important officials--one of them was my former captain--before running. We were under orders to kill him.
I was in charge of engineering and trying to fix the ship, so I have not been told all of what happened, but the captain--Captain Kirk, who is in the City now--decided to capture him instead. Harrison said that he was working with the admiral who had ordered his death and his real name was Khan, which is bad because Khan was a famously brutal warlord in the twentieth century. Everything was more confusing after that. The admiral opened fire on our ship, Khan allied himself with us, and everything went very wrong--but that isn't relevant. Khan turned against us again and now he's in the City. So yes... war criminal, genocidal tyrant, terrorist, and augmented human being. You should avoid him if you can. I know that you're strong, but he is intelligent and strong and ruthless.
That isn't the whole story, but it is most of what I know. [Except for the parts where engineering was hell and a bunch of people were sucked out into space on Chekov's watch. But yeah, old-school dictator, evil admiral...]
[Korra......didn't really follow a word of that. His accent is just thick enough and the story just complicated enough that she is completely and utterly lost.
But. That doesn't matter. She reaches out a hand to squeeze his arm comfortingly.]
[He doesn't expect her to follow--or, for that matter, really want her to. Getting the words out is enough, and he'd rather not have anyone fuss (too much. A little fussing once in a while is nice).
Chekov smiles up at Korra. She cares, which is what is important.]
